These atoms are a mixture; about half will be in the lower hyperfine state and half in the upper state, and the first job is to separate them. This is done by passing the beam through a specially shaped magnet, a technique devised by Otto Stern and Walther Gerlach in the early 1920s to study the structure of atoms. Since the caesium atoms themselves are magnetic, they are deflected by the magnetic field according to their energy states and emerge from the magnet in two slightly different directions, one for the lower state and one for the upper state.
