Bennett served as tribal chairperson for eight years before rivals among the Puyallups drove her from office. She has since devoted herself to helping minority children in need.

After graduation, Bedard moved to New York City, where she cofounded the Chuka Lokali theater group. Bedard had her big break when she was cast in the lead of the television movie Lakota Woman: Siege at Wounded Knee (1994). In 1970, non-Indian law enforcement agents began to crack down on Puyallup fishers who, desperate to feed their families, ignored the ban. The agents harassed the Indians, confiscated their traps, hauled them off to jail, and even tried to run them over with their powerboats. A group of Puyallup, including Bennett, responded by setting up an armed camp on the riverbank. After a 10-week standoff, agents raided the camp and used tear gas and clubs to subdue the protesters. Bennett was assaulted and, with 59 others, taken to jail and accused of inciting a riot.
